38 Years of excellence in 2012
The first Border Music Camp was held in 1975, under the umbrella of the National Music Camp Association
(now Australian Youth Orchestra Ltd.). The Camp was the brainchild of the late Rev. Derek Evans, who felt that a
music camp would be a good way to fill some of the gaps in music education in Albury.
The Camp’s early years were precarious, and it benefited greatly from the formidable
advocacy of the late Ruth Alexander, a co-founder of NMCA; she retained considerable clout after retiring
and her constant support for Border was vital.
After Rev. Evans left Albury in 1977, the founding Secretary, Cate Davis, was appointed Director. She directed 18 Camps,
retiring at the 20th Camp in 1994. Under her leadership Border Music Camp gained a very high reputation for musical
excellence and creativity; as much as is its continued existence, its characteristic musical vitality is her legacy. This
tradition could be seen in 2005, when our composer-in-residence program won the nationally
recognised Australian Music Centre/APRA Award for ‘Outstanding contribution to Australian music in a regional area’.
The Camp has always been held at the superb campus of The Scots School Albury; in 2005 we were delighted when the School
became our Principal Sponsor.
Starting with 61 Campers, we now have 250. Past Campers include numerous professional musicians, teachers and music
administrators, and hundreds of people whose lives have been enriched by Border Music Camp.
