Ed Ferris

Clarinet maverick Ed Ferris is a versatile musician, teacher and conductor working in Australia and Europe.

Ed’s clarinet playing blends breakneck virtuosity, soulful musicality and a larrikin charm to enthrall audiences. Ed has given sold out performances with the Orchestra of the Liszt Academy (Hungary), Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra, junk-yard folk band Eyal & the Skeleton Crew, and the avant-garde Forest Collective.

Ed is also a sought-after teacher, conductor and clinician. He has worked with students for Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Regional Arts Victoria, Melbourne Youth Orchestras, as well as in numerous Victorian schools for the past 20 years. He has worked at Border Music Camp, tutoring clarinet and conducting Pringle, since 2008.

Ed has recently returned to Australia after studying chamber music and Kodály pedagogy at the Kodály Institute of the Liszt Academy in Kecskemét, Hungary, with Lajos Rosman and Zsuazana Takats. In 2025, Ed toured regional Hungary performing Australian clarinet music with the support of the Liszt Academy, Danube Festival Orchestra and the Kodály Institute.

As well as being a passionate clarinettist, Ed is an advocate for the mental health benefits of group music making and has served as managing director of the Melbourne Sea Shanty Society. He has led sea shanty sessions across the seven seas, including appearances at the Albany International Folk ‘n’ Sea Shanty Festival, Newport Folk Festival, and PAX Video Gaming and Culture Festival.

Ed previously worked as the Arts Learning Manager at The Song Room, a not-for profit organisation that seeks to level the education playing field by making high-quality music education accessible to all students across Australia. In this role, Ed managed large scale professional learning programs for teachers as well as student well-being programs in partnership with the Victorian Department of Education.

Ed currently teaches clarinet and conducts ensembles at Eltham High School.
